Featured Veteran: Staff Sergeant Matt Sims
U.S. Army Veteran | Three-Time Purple Heart Recipient
At the heart of the Remembrance Ball is something far more meaningful than an evening together. It is the opportunity to preserve the stories of those who served and ensure their experiences are never forgotten.
This year, we are honored to feature the story of Staff Sergeant Matt Sims, a U.S. Army veteran and three-time recipient of the Purple Heart.
Matt will join us in person at the Remembrance Ball to share his story with our guests, offering a deeply personal perspective on service, sacrifice, courage, and the lasting bonds forged through military service.
His story represents exactly why the Mid America Veterans Museum exists: to preserve the experiences of America’s veterans, honor their legacies, and connect future generations with the men and women behind our nation’s military history.
On October 23, we won’t simply remember history. We will hear it from someone who lived it.
The Military Grog Tradition
The Military Grog is a time-honored tradition that traces its origins to the British Royal Navy and has become a cherished part of military culture worldwide. For generations, service members have gathered around the Grog Bowl as a symbol of camaraderie, remembrance, and the enduring bonds forged through military service.
At the Mid America Veterans Museum Remembrance Ball, the Grog Ceremony is one of the evening’s most meaningful experiences, bringing together veterans, active-duty service members, families, and supporters in a shared tribute to those who have served.
The ceremony will feature:
• A ceremonial Grog Bowl prepared in military tradition
• Toasts honoring the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of America’s veterans
• The reading of ceremonial charges and spirited military customs
• A memorable experience that connects generations through heritage, humor, and honor
More than a tradition, the Military Grog represents the fellowship that unites those who have worn the uniform. It reminds us that alongside sacrifice are lifelong friendships, shared experiences, and an unwavering commitment to one another.
In the spirit of inclusion and fellowship, both traditional and nonalcoholic Military Grog will be available so every guest can participate in this cherished military tradition.
