Elmer enlisted in the Army in 1942. He was trained to be a combat engineer. Elmer’s career took him all over the world. His most fortuitous stop was in Dijon France where he met the love of his life in Odette Bier, a Frenchwoman who was an agent with the French resistance.

Elmer had an interesting and illustrious career which included being Knighted by the Dutch Queen in 1954.
