Gary Lee Scoles
Gary Lee Scoles was born 16-AUG 1948 in Valley Park, St Louis, Missouri. His parents were Paul Gladstone Scoles (1910–1980) and Juanita Ruth (James) Scoles (1911–1983). Gary had six siblings: James, Robert. Joyce, Keith, Linda, and Debra.
Gary lived at 920 Nirk in Kirkwood Mo and attended Kirkwood High School. One day in 1965, Gary and his friend decided to break into the country club where they worked to steal some beer. Gary was charged with breaking and entering in October 1966. The judge offered Gary a deal – join the Army or go to jail. Gary chose the Army.
Gary enlisted in the Army on 31-May 1967.
Gary was in the thick of the action in Vietnam. While serving in Vietnam, Gary was awarded two Purple Hearts. One of his wounds was superficial but the other was very serious. Gary however, finished his tour.
Like many veterans, the adjustment back into civilian life was very difficult. His story includes a select number of the many letters Gary wrote to family members. These letters are in his own words. Most have been abridged for clarification and brevity. Please note, the story is about war, often frank, and may not be suitable for everyone.
