In January 1943 he was in basic training at Camp Claiborne Louisiana.  Harold wrote home how much he missed the dances and wanted badly to go on the SS Admiral on the St. Louis Riverfront and listen to the orchestra.

Harold went overseas in October 1944.  He served in the 103rd Division, 409 Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, Rifle Company C.  The 103rd departed the United States for Europe on 5 October 1944. Harold was at the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded on the first day.
